Indica and Sativa

Indica and Sativa: The Tales and the Truths

With the continuous increase in the popularity of cannabis as both a recreational and medical substance, more variations in product types and intensity are becoming prevalent as well. However, with the abundance of all these cannabis products brought upon by demand and innovation, there are two words that ultimately influence a lot of cannabis consumer’s decision – indica and sativa. Hence, it is always important to understand the two main types of raw cannabis plant, their physical traits, and physiological effects, among others.

There are so many myths on the difference in the characteristics and effects of these two cannabis species. On this blog post, we will examine which preconceptions are right and which of those are pure hearsays.

Physical Differences

Indica and Sativa do not only manifest their differences on their physiological effects to the human. These two major cannabis strains are also very different physically.

Cannabis Indica plants grow short with broad leaves, while Sativa plants are taller and thinner with narrow leaves. Sativa plants have longer flowering cycles than Indica plants. Growing Sativa plants are also more optimal in warm climates, while Indica plants are better suited in places with cool climates. Sativa plants may also have a stronger smell than indica plants.

Cannabinoids Content

While there are a lot of myths claiming that Indica has higher CBD count and lower THC content (and vice versa), Leafly conducted a research that proves that THC and CBD levels could vary no matter what the strain or type it is. The research shows that while there is some difference in THC content between indica and sativa, the difference is not considered statistically significant. This means that the difference in cannabinoid levels between indica and sativa is not enough to say that they are polar opposites.

Psychological Effects

The most important difference between indica and sativa is their psychological effects to humans, particularly how they influence energy levels.

Cannabis indica is good for mind and body relaxation. Medically, it is often used for muscle and pain relief. It also helps with nausea and insomnia. Recreational consumers often smoke or consume indica-dominant products when they do not have to exert a lot of physical and mental effort, such as in the evenings after work. Aside from being a relaxer, indica is also consumed to increase appetite.

Meanwhile, Cannabis sativa is commonly considered as an energy booster. This is often consumed when one needs to be productive. Aside from helping patients focus better, sativa can also serve as an anti-depressant.

One joke to use to differentiate indica and sativa is the fact that consuming indica makes patients want to stay “indi-couch.”

Understanding the difference between indica and sativa is a good foundation when making decisions on the cannabis products to purchase and use. However, at the end of the day, it all boils down to your body’s tolerance. Remember that only your body could tell you what kind of high is best for you.
